THE MAKING OF APPETIZERS

In March of 2022, I was in the process of finishing my first solo Art project “WHATCANYACALLIT” to showcase when ready, with only 4 pieces left; I had to take a break from being too consumed in the vision.

The project was very challenging for which I had to work from within and bring these expressions out of me to manifest on canvas. It took a lot of shadow work and reflecting to visualize that series, so a break away was necessary, hitting the refresh button to just have fun creating instead of conceptualizing a full-on project of self.

Appetizers started off on the serious note with a piece such as “Bunny Runnin’ To The Munny” which was focused on the slave trade of chocolate being created and distributed in the Côté d’Ivoire of West Africa.

Things was very free flowing and open in the beginning, soon the Art series lead to a theme of summer feels and bright colors which played into the mood by taking inspiration to the summer life of Phoenix, Arizona.

The last Art piece to Appetizers, “We Out Here Meltin” sets the tone to this summer project;

inspired by the viral video of a Phoenix native that was stressed out on how hot it was outside hinting,

WE OUT HERE MELTIN’!

Another take was from a post I found on Facebook saying,

“Check On Your Chocolate Friends, We Out Here Meltin” adding double meaning to being hot and checking on one another especially after the Pandemic, for which we all could be dealing with our problems mentally, spiritually and physically.

The reason I called the Art series “Appetizers” was about giving people small doses before the main course, also going by the fact that I’m using chocolate syrup as my medium; it all made sense.

I felt as if I was a chef, in the kitchen cooking up Art to put out on the table to enjoy.
